In the beginning
5 young girls, each of who was hungry for stardom, Victoria
Adams (Posh), Melanie Chisolm(Sporty), Emma Bunton(Baby), Geri
Halliwell(Ginger) and Melanie Brown(Scary). Little did they know
how famous they were all about to become as they launched
themselves as 'The Spice Girls'.
Spice
On July 8th 1996, the Spice Girls released their first single
from the debut Album 'Spice'.. It was a huge success, earning
them their first number 1.
| It was clear already that these
girls were going to be a force to be reckoned with, as the
song went on to be a number 1 hit in 31 other countries. On
top of that, they had managed to achieve something that many
other artists spend a lifetime trying to do - they had
cracked the US. As the album was released it sent copies
flying off the shelves and 1.8 million were sold in the UK
in just seven weeks. It went on to become the biggest
selling album of 1997. Other songs to be released from the
album where 'Say you'll be there', '2 become 1' and the
double A-side 'Mama' & 'Who do you think you are' which
featured Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders among other
comediennes for Comic Relief. |

Spiceworld
The girls second album 'Spiceworld' was an instant global
success, and even had a movie that went with it. Although
their media popularity had declined somewhat since their
first album, the girls still managed to achieve huge hits
with 'Spice up your life', 'Too Much', 'Stop' and of course
'Viva Forever' which was to be Geri's last release with the
group. |
| It was in 1997 that the girls
embarked on their first movie' Spiceworld', which featured a
whole host of Britich talent such as Hugh Laurie, Roger
Moore, Elton John, Jennifer Saunders, Michael Barrymore and
more. Despite it's cast list the movie got a lukewarm review
from the critics, with the 'Spice's' acting skills being
pulled to pieces. For the millions of fans though, it just
didn't matter, and the movie was a hit at the Box Office. It
was in the same year that the girls sent the media in a
frenzy after they sacked their manager Simon Fuller after
rumours that he had been too controlling. |

Goodbye
On May 31st 1998 Spice fans around the globe were in shock
after Geri Halliwell announced that she had left the group.
The following is the statement that Geri made through her
solicitor at the time: "Sadly I would like to confirm that I
have left the Spice Girls. This is because of differences
between us. I'm sure the group will continue to be
successful and I wish them all the best"
Geri insisted that she had been suffering from exhaustion
among other problems, but others within the Spice Camp were
stating that their had been rifts between her and Melanie B.
Either way, it left the world and the media wondering if
this was the end of the Spice Girls.
At Christmas in 1998 the remaining four Spice Girls released
'Goodbye' which has been claimed to be a tribute to Geri,
although if the rumours of rifts were true then that could
be seen as hard to believe. Clearly it proved though that
the Spice Girls were still able to stay on top of the charts
even if they were down by one member, as the song earned
them their third Christmas Number1. |
Forever
In 2000 the group were
awarded the Outstanding Achievement to Music award at the
2000 Brits, and despite being at the awards herself, Geri
Halliwell did not take part. The girls first song from the
new album was another double A-side 'Holler' and 'Let love
lead the way'. It enjoyed some success in it's home country
but failed to make it into the Billboard Hot 100 stateside.
It perhaps came as no surprise that the group announced in
2001 that they would be taking a break and concentrating
more on their solo careers, though they were adamant that
the group was not splitting up. |
The Reunion
| In June 2007 The Spice
Girls announced formally that they were intending to reunite
for a World-Wide tour and was to include the return of Geri
Halliwell to the group. The ticket sales for the first
concert date in London reportedly sold out in just 38
seconds. The tour went on to be a huge success and many new
dates were being added due to fast sell-outs. Although the
girls had so many tour dates scheduled, they eventually
pulled out early due to 'personal and family commitments'.
It meant that many dates were cancelled. |
 |
| The groups comeback
single was 'Headlines (Friendship never ends)' and was also
the Official Children in Need single for 2007. Despite being
their first release for years the group failed to gain high
sales with the single and it peaked at just number 11 in the
UK charts, their worst charting single to date. |
What Next
Rumours have once again been fuelled by the press and if you
believe them then it's Victoria Beckham to blame for the quick
end to the tour and possible end to the 'Spice Girls', but truth
is that the world is always looking for someone to blame, and
the only one's who know the truth are the girls themselves.
| Whether this is the end
or not, certainly these five women have given us years of
enjoyment, and kept us entertained in one way or another. We
may have seen the last tour, and the last single, but who
can honestly say, and as the girls more recently said
themselves: "who knows what will happen next." |
